ABSTRACT

In the late 1980s and early 1990s the bootstrap methods introduced by Efron in 1979 started to be applied and a number of books were published which introduce the theory and demonstrate the methods. This tutorial, based on the speaker's book, is designed to provide an introduction for the practitioner, to illustrate the wide variety of applications and modifications of the basic bootstrap idea. The tutorial will start with an introduction to the bootstrap and a wide variety of applications. Many "real world" applications from the speaker's experience in the aerospace and medical device industries will be described. Applications to error rate estimates for discriminant functions will then be covered including a summary of the results from various simulation studies. The various modifications for confidence interval estimation and hypothesis testing will be discussed next. Then the applications to capability indices and multiple hypothesis testing will be discussed. Examples indicating when the bootstrap fails are provided in the conclusion. An extensive bibliography with over 1600 references, available in the speaker's book, will be discussed.

THE SPEAKER'S BOOK

The Speaker's book, Bootstrap Methods: A Practitioner's Guide, newly published (Sept. 1999) by Wiley in the Wiley Series in Probability and Mathematical Statistics - Applied Probability & Statistics Section, can be obtained at the UCI Center for Statistical Consulting which is open from 11am to 5pm daily. The Center is located in Social Science Plaza B-1296.
