A Short Course for UCI Researchers

Getting Started with SAS Statistical Software

Five Mornings (8:30am - 12:30pm):
Beginning on Wednesday, September 15, course will meet on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Course ends on Wednesday, September 22.

Daily Schedule:
Session 1: 90 Minutes
30 Minute Break
Session 2: 90 Minutes

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the basic elements of SAS enabling participants to begin using this program package for data entry, data management, and statistical analysis. Each participant will receive a carefully selected subset of SAS documentation and a brief primer that provides general ideas about how the software system is organized as well as many tips for using SAS. The course will familiarize participants with the contents of these books so that they will support the use of SAS well beyond the end of the class.

Because the University of California SAS site license makes it affordable, all UCI employees will be encouraged to acquire SAS for their personal computers: By using their personal computers to practice using SAS during the week of the class, participants will be better prepared to use SAS thereafter. UCI employees may obtain SAS for their personal computers by contacting Donald Frederick at the UCI Office of Academic Computing located in room 2130 of the Engineering Gateway building, telephone [949] 824-3200.

About the Course: The course will address the following topics.

How SAS defines and manages data files
SAS file structure (data libraries)
The data step
Using SAS to initially define (enter) data
Using previously defined data sets
Using SAS functions to modify data
Saving SAS data sets

SAS statistical procedures:
Univariate procedures: FREQ, MEANS, and UNIVARIATE
Transforming variables: The STANDARD Procedure
Correlation Coefficients: The CORR Procedure
Regression Procedures: REG and GLM
Comparing two means: The TTEST Procedure
Analysis of Variance procedures: ANOVA and GLM

Producing Scatterplots with SAS/GRAPH procedures:
Using GOPTIONS to control the size and locations of the output
Using AXIS, SYMBOLS, TITLE, and LEGEND statements to make
the plot more informative
Overlaying plots with regression models
