A Short Course for UCI Researchers

Getting Started with SAS 8.2 Statistical Software

Five Consecutive Mornings (8:30am - Noon):
Beginning on Monday, September 9, course will meet for five
consecutive mornings in Social Science Tower 630.
Course ends on Friday, September 13.

Daily Schedule:
Session 1: 90 Minutes (8:30am - 10am)
30 Minute Break
Session 2: 90 Minutes (10:30am - Noon)

Drop-in Computer Lab (Daily, 1:30pm - 3:30pm): Offered so participants may work on class exercises with the instructor present to answer questions.

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the basic elements of SAS version 8.2, enabling participants to begin using this program package for data entry, data management, and statistical analysis. Now that SAS documentation is available on-line, participants will be introduced to this new resource and trained in its use. Each participant will receive a set of course notes and a brief primer that provides general ideas about how the software system is organized as well as many tips for using SAS.

Because of a recent agreement between the University of California and the SAS Institute, all UCI researchers may install SAS 8.2 on their office computers at no charge. By using their personal computers to practice using SAS outside of class, participants will be better prepared to continue using SAS after this short course ends. UCI researchers may obtain installation CDs for SAS 8.2 in advance of the start of class by contacting the UCI Office of Network & Academic Computing Services - NACS, located in Engineering Gateway 2130 (telephone [949] 824-6116) or by contacting the UCI Center for Statistical Consulting, located in Berkeley Place Suite 4900 (telephone [949] 824-1680).

About the Course: The course will address the following topics.

How SAS defines, modifies, and manages data files
SAS file structure (data libraries)
The SAS data step
Three ways to define a new SAS data set
Using a previously defined SAS or ASCII data set
Importing foreign data files (eg. SPSS, EXCEL, etc.) into SAS
Combining SAS data sets (eg. Stacking, Merging, etc.)
Using SAS functions to modify data
Saving SAS data sets

SAS statistical procedures:
Univariate analysis: FREQ, MEANS, and UNIVARIATE Procedures
Transforming variables: The STANDARD Procedure
Correlation Coefficients: CORR and FREQ Procedures
Regression analysis: REG and GLM Procedures
Comparing two means: The TTEST Procedure
Analysis of Variance: ANOVA and GLM Procedures

Producing Scatterplots with SAS/GRAPH procedures:
Using GOPTIONS to control the size and other features of the graphic
Using AXIS, SYMBOLS, TITLE, and LEGEND statements to enhance plots
Overlaying plots with regression models and confidence bands
