Census 2000: Accomplishments, Goals, and Implications

Abstract

Dr. Gordon will report on the current status of Census 2000 – what has been accomplished to date and what remains to be done. She will describe plans for releasing the data, which will use the Internet as the primary dissemination vehicle. As an example of a new feature of Census 2000 that is especially relevant to the State of California, she will discuss the implications of the revised question on race which now allows each individual to report more than one racial heritage.

About the Speaker

As the Associate Director for Demographic Programs, Dr. Gordon is responsible for ensuring that the mission and objectives of the Census Bureau's demographic programs are carried out. To this end she provides executive leadership to the Census Bureau’s four demographic divisions (over $200 million annual budget and more than 800 employees). This includes developing new programs; devising strategies to ensure a well-trained, productive, and diverse workforce; and coordinating the development of annual and long-term plans and budgets, as well as defending them during the budget process. In addition, she serves as a principal spokesperson on demographic matters for both the Census Bureau and for the Department of Commerce: testifying before Congressional committees, participating in expert panels and forums, giving speeches and other presentations, and representing the Census Bureau on policy committees.

Before joining the Census Bureau in 1995, Dr. Gordon was the Assistant Director for Health and Human Resources in the Congressional Budget Office. She completed her Ph.D. in Economics and Statistics at Stanford University in 1970 after receiving her B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1964.
